The parliamentarians are “the foremost servants of the people” and their pays should be decided in accordance with that of the government servants. Therefore a creation of separate pay commission to decide on the pay and allowances of Parliament Members would be a healthy practice. The MPs’ salaries should be linked with some such systemic mechanism.

The government has effected a huge increase in the pay and allowances of Members of Parliament. The media launched a virulent campaign against this pay hike of MPs.

It was not correct for legislators to decide on their own salaries. There should be a separate mechanism for the purpose. MPs have to be delinked from deciding their own salaries because they should observe normal political morality.

In 2006, the then minister of state for parliamentary affairs had said the government was willing to accept this proposal and had promised to come back to the house on the issue. But the government is yet to do so and is continuing with the same old norm of  MPs deciding on their pay structure.

There are various proposals before the government and several international practices in this regard. The French parliamentarians’ pay is “one Franc above the pay of the highest paid bureaucrat”.  Britain, Australia and many other countries had similar practices.
